A 3-2 victory over Liverpool secured Manchester United’s spot in next season’s Champions League. However, the goalless draw against Sunderland highlighted which players are ready for the rigors of European competition.

United looked sluggish and uninspired at the Stadium of Light, as a rotated lineup failed to replicate the precision and intensity that have defined their best performances under Michael Carrick.

Before the trip to the northeast, optimism around the club had shifted toward planning for the future. Had Carrick done enough to earn the permanent managerial role? Could Bruno Fernandes break the elusive record of 20 Premier League assists? Would any of Carrington’s top academy prospects get valuable minutes with the senior team?

The draw offered few clear answers, instead raising a host of concerns. Does United have enough squad depth to make a deep run in next season’s Champions League? Which areas, aside from central midfield, need reinforcements? How can Carrick and his coaching staff prevent complacency in the final games of the season?

Opinions may differ on how much can be read into United’s performances after securing Champions League football earlier than expected, but Carrick’s men labored through difficult moments against Sunderland.

They managed only one shot on target, while Senne Lammens had to stay alert to deny Brian Brobbey and Noah Sadiki. There is plenty of work ahead.

“It was a tough game,” Carrick said in his post-match press conference. “Credit to Sunderland, we knew it would be challenging coming here. We had to dig deep at times. It wasn’t our best, but taking something from a game when you’re not at your best is a good trait we’re trying to build.”

Saturday’s draw was largely due to squad rotation, with injuries to Benjamin Sesko and Casemiro forcing Carrick to make five changes from the lineup that defeated Liverpool.

The mood around United has been positive in recent weeks, but this match will not feature among the highlights of Carrick’s interim tenure.

Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee were handed rare Premier League starts, but neither did enough to earn another opportunity against Nottingham Forest next Sunday.

Mount has had a stop-start United career, plagued by injuries that have prevented him from securing a regular spot. He partnered Kobbie Mainoo in holding midfield, showing tidy possession but lacking the bruising brilliance of Casemiro.

Sunderland’s aggressive press forced United to struggle to play out of their half for most of the first hour. They lacked the precision to pass through Regis Le Bris’ side and couldn’t move the ball quickly enough to bypass the pressure.

Lammens’ attempts to play long balls were hampered by a team shape ill-suited to winning second balls. Ambitious runs off the ball from Matheus Cunha and others went unanswered by a midfield unable to hit long, probing passes. Carrick’s starting lineup revealed much about United’s squad depth, which is ill-equipped to compete on four fronts in 2026-27.

Their pursuit of a Casemiro successor is well-documented; this draw underscored the many tasks ahead.
